Beyond Sadness
With depression comes waves of good and bad times. The goal of medication and therapy is to have less bad times and to be able to manage them better when they do come. Because it is certain they will come. Those who do not understand believe we are sad…a lot. But we know it is beyond sadness we are feeling. We have come to hear certain phrases from people such as...
She/ he is:
“too emotional”
“crying again”
“sad”
“in a bad mood”
“overreacting”
You need to know what we are dealing with is beyond sadness. We are not sad again or crying again. We are deeply feeling the loss of ourselves. The inability to control due to chemical imbalances. During these times we are not sad…we are fighting for our lives. Fighting to feel “normal” again. To make it through a day without crying. Tired of wearing our masks to make it through the day. Tired of trying to be a good friend, employee, family member, etc. Tired of being depressed and going through the cycles. Getting out of bed is a task, showering is a task, going to work is a task, talking to people is a HUGE task, any little thing beyond lying in bed or sleeping is a task. If we are crying, withdrawn, or emotional, it is because we feel so deeply and are unable to cope. We are hopeless and lost. We want someone to see through the “I’m okays”. We want to be accepted for who we are. We want someone who understands by our side. We want to just be and heal. If you do not understand, it is ok. Don’t pretend you do or think we are just “sad again” or whatever term you chose to use.
Two important things…we are not just sad again and we do not want to be this way.
Depression goes beyond being sad.
